IPL 2022: Kane Williamson fined INR 12 lakh for SRH’s slow over-rate against RR

Kane Williamson Fined

Kane Williamson fined 12 Lakhs and become became the second captain after Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma to be found guilty of this offence this season.

As if Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 61-run loss to Rajasthan Royals in their IPL 2022 opener wasn’t terrible enough, team captain Kane Williamson fined for INR 12 lakh for keeping a sluggish over-rate throughout the game. As a result, the New Zealand international has now become the second skipper this season to be found guilty of this offence, following Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma.

The over rate rules are very strict, so captains must keep a close eye on the clock. While the first offence will result in a fine of INR 12 lakh, if a team’s captain is found guilty of the same offence twice, the fine will be doubled (INR 24 lakh).

Captains in the IPL must keep an eye on the time.

If it happens a third time, the officials will not only impose a fine of INR 30 lakh, but the captain would also be suspended for a match. From the second offence onwards, the players will be required to pay fines.

“The Sunrisers Hyderabad have been penalised after they maintained a sluggish over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 encounter against Rajasthan Royals at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on March 29,” according to a BCCI statement issued on Wednesday (March 30).

Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson fined Rs 12 lakhs for the team’s first breach of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, according to the statement.

Coming to the game, the Orange Army was outplayed in all three departments as RR were on a roll. Batting first in Pune, the Men in Pink posted 210/6 in their allotted 20 overs. While skipper Sanju Samson slammed a fiery half-century, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, Devdutt Padikkal and Shimron Hetmyer chipped in with crucial contributions.

In reply, SRH lost skipper Williamson in the very second over courtesy of a controversial catch from Padikkal. Aiden Markram and Washington Sundar played handy knocks at the back-end of the innings but their efforts could only narrow down SRH’s margin of defeat. As a result, SRH were restricted to 149/7, losing the contest by 61 runs.

Williamson claimed his team got off to a terrific start, with pacer Umran Malik clocking 150 kilometres per hour in the opening over. However, his bowlers sent a few no-balls, allowing Rajasthan Royals to score a competitive 210/6 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
