The T20 World Cup 2024 came to a dramatic close as Team India triumphed over South Africa by seven runs in the final match held in Barbados on June 29.
Virat Kohli’s outstanding performance, scoring 76 runs from just 59 balls, earned him the prestigious ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Despite a slow start, the Indian batting star accelerated brilliantly to reach a 48-ball 50*, before smashing 26 runs from just eight deliveries.
Virat Kohli ended up with 76 runs from 59 balls. Later, Axar Patel and Shivam Dube also chipped in, thus taking India to a respectable total of 176 runs.
Upon clinching the T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli felt the time had come to step down from T20 international cricket, and hence he announced his retirement soon after India’s win.
Here’s what childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma said on Virat Kohli’s retirement:
“It’s a very big win. All Indians have been waiting for this for a very long time. I would like to congratulate all the citizens of the country and the Indian team. This is a very big moment. Virat has retired on a very significant occasion when India has won the World Cup. He was the man of the match in the final, so it is a huge moment. All the fans are disappointed. I’ve been receiving many calls since last night asking why he did this.”
