Virat Kohli opened up about his friendship with tennis legend Novak Djokovic, emphasising the mutual admiration they share and sending warm wishes for Djokovic’s performance in the upcoming Australian Open 2024.
Kohli is set to represent India in the second T20I against Afghanistan in Indore, making a return after being unavailable for the opening game due to personal reasons. Meanwhile, Djokovic is preparing to defend his Australian Open title in Melbourne.
In a BCCI-released video, Kohli revealed how the two legendary players started talking. Here’s what the Indian batting giant said:
“I was checking Novak Djokovic’s profile on Instagram and thought of saying hello to him. However, I saw his message in my DM. I rechecked the profile again and found it to be legitimate. We then started talking and share messages every now and then. I congratulated him for his achievements in tennis.”
Kohli further revealed that Djokovic sent him a message after he completed his 50th ODI century during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“When I reached my 50th century, he put up a story and he sent me a nice message. We share a mutual admiration and respect for each other. It is good to connect with global athletes.”
“I have a lot of respect for him and I admire his passion for fitness. I am a firm believer in fitness. So we connect on a couple of topics. If he comes to India, we will catch up or else if I am in a country where he is playing, I will meet him.”
Kohli went on to wish Djokovic all the best for the 2024 Australian Open.
“I would like to wish you all the very best for the Australian Open. I know you will perform well and have a great tournament.”
