India’s batting maestro Virat Kohli added another feather to his golden cap on Sunday, October 30 during a Super-12 contest against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 at the Perth Stadium.
The former India captain became the second batter after Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene to score 1000 runs or more in the history of the Men’s T20 World Cup. He took just 22 innings to accomplish the milestone.

Sri Lankan batting great Mahela Jayawardene is at the top of the highest run-scorer rally in the T20 World Cup. He has scored 1,016 runs from 31 matches in the marquee event in the shortest format of the game.

Notably, these two are the only players to achieve this milestone in the history of the World T20. Kohli, himself is now on the verge of eclipsing Jayawardene as he needs just 16 more runs to become the leading run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Before the South Africa clash, Kohli had 989 runs from 21 innings in the T20 World Cup. He came in to bat after South Africa speedster Lungi Ngidi dismissed India skipper Rohit Sharma in the fifth over.

Kohli played a 12-run knock against South Africa before Ngidi sent him packing in the seventh over. This quick knock helped him etch his name in the record book.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has so far scored 919 runs in the T20 World Cup history and is 81 runs behind from becoming the second Indian player to score 1000 runs in the showpiece tournament.
Following a long lean patch, the Delhi batter finally found his groove in the Asia Cup in the UAE earlier this month and he replicated his good run in this edition of the T20 World Cup. He struck back-to-back half-centuries in the first two matches of the gala event, with his unbeaten 82 being one of the best knocks of his T20I career.
