With the changing dynamics of ODI cricket, any target is not too big to chase. However, if a team wants to crush a huge target, they need solid partnerships from batters.

If two batters extend their stay on the crease by accumulating runs, then it becomes a piece of cake to thump a target, however big it may be.

In this article, we’ll look at the top 10 highest partnerships that came while chasing a target in ODIs.

Key Insights

286: The 286-run partnership between Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga is the highest partnership that came while chasing a target in ODIs. The formidable partnership unfolded for the 1st wicket in a successful pursuit of 322 runs against England.

2: There are 3 players that have been involved in two 230+ run partnerships in run chases in ODIs. Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock partnered with each other twice, while Upul Tharanga paired with Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan once each.

6: Among the 230+ run partnerships, only 1 partnership has come for the 6th or lower wicket during a run chase. The 242-run alliance between Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi unfurled for the 6th wicket against Sri Lanka while chasing 382.

However, the gritty collaboration went in vain as Sri Lanka won the match by 42 runs. And this is the highest partnership in a losing cause in the 50-over format.

200: There have been over 50 instances of 200+ partnerships while chasing a target, with most of them coming for the first 3 wickets.

201: During the 2023 World Cup, the cricketing world saw a knock of a lifetime from Glenn Maxwell. While chasing a target of 292 against Afghanistan, Australia were down and out on 91/7.

Then came the mighty Maxwell, who single-handedly crushed the Afghani bowling attack by smashing an unbeaten 201. This is the highest individual score in a run chase in ODIs.

8: Moreover, Maxwell found an able partner in captain Pat Cummins (12* off 68), who stood his ground for a 202-run partnership between them. This is the highest partnership for the 8th wicket in the ODI format.
