The Pakistan national cricket team captain, Babar Azam, returned to Pakistan on Monday, June 24, after spending time in London for a vacation following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Notably, the Men in Green failed to qualify for the Super 8s. They were placed in Group A alongside archrivals India, Canada, the USA, and Ireland. While they lost matches against India and Canada, their wins against the USA and Ireland were insufficient.
The USA, playing in their first T20 World Cup, went on to qualify for the Super 8s alongside India. There was significant criticism directed at Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, for his captaincy approach and poor batting performance.
Former cricketers have often criticized Babar Azam for his timid batting approach and captaincy, which they believe has caused Pakistan to falter in back-to-back World Cups. Notably, Pakistan also failed to qualify for the semifinals in the ODI World Cup 2023 last year.
The anger and frustration among fans are at their peak, and it was evident when Babar Azam arrived back in Pakistan. Some pictures of him smiling were shared on social media, and fans vented their frustration out, questioning why Babar Azam was smiling after their World Cup debacle.
Here’s how fans have reacted:
Smiling for exactly what ? For not qualifying for Super 8’s in the group of USA , IRE and Canada ?I see Captain knocks of Rashid, Buttler, and Rohit to ensure semis for their team and the next hour I see his face returning after an extended stay at USA. https://t.co/GMr3H0Ykyw— Areeba (@arieba_chaudryy) June 25, 2024
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has requested a report on the team’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. Babar Azam will soon visit the PCB office to submit the report himself.
