The glitz and glamour of the Indian Premier League (IPL) may still be a few months away for the 2025 season, but preparations for the lucrative league are already underway. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun finalizing key aspects ahead of the much-anticipated mega auction in December.
One of the main topics of discussion is the salary cap. The BCCI has asked franchises to share their views on player retention and the salary cap. Since the IPL’s inception, the salary cap has steadily increased, rising from $5 million in 2008 to its current $100 million.
Rise in Salary Cap for IPL 2025 Mega-Auction
According to Cricbuzz, all franchise CEOs have requested a salary cap increase from the BCCI. While there was a 5% rise from IPL 2023 to 2024 (Rs 95 crore to Rs 100 crore), expectations are for at least a 10% increase before the IPL 2025 mega auction. An even bigger 20% jump (Rs 20 crore) is also a possibility.
With the current rules allowing franchises to buy 25 players (with a maximum of 8 foreigners), teams have Rs 110-120 crore to spend at the auction after accounting for potential retentions. An increased salary cap would give them more flexibility to pursue their targets aggressively.
