The era draws to a close as Rohit Sharma, following Virat Kohli’s lead, announces his retirement from T20 international cricket after clinching the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on June 29.
Rohit Sharma, leading from the front in the T20 World Cup 2024, fulfilled his promise by guiding India to ICC trophy glory, ending a drought lasting more than a decade.
While confirming his retirement from T20Is, Rohit Sharma also assured that he remains dedicated to playing ODI and Test cricket for India. It’s likely he’s eyeing the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 to lead India.
Here’s what Rohit Sharma said in the media conference:
“This was my last (T20I) game as well,” Rohit revealed during the post-match press conference.
“No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup. I wanted this badly. Very hard to put in words. It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line.”
The conclusion of his T20I career sees him retire as the format’s all-time highest run-scorer, having amassed 4231 runs in 159 matches. Notably, he leaves behind a legacy with the record for the most centuries in T20 internationals, having hit five during his tenure.
