The World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev recently made controversial remarks about Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli during a recent event, comparing him with the current Indian captain, Rohit Sharma.
There is no doubt that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are legends of the game in the current era, and comparisons between them are often made by fans. However, this time it’s former Indian captain Kapil Dev who has weighed in.
At a recent event, Kapil Dev said that Rohit Sharma is a calm and composed captain who answers his critics with his batting, contrasting him with Virat Kohli, known for his more aggressive on-field demeanor.
Kapil Dev further criticized Virat Kohli, suggesting that some captains play for themselves rather than focusing on team success, while Rohit Sharma fosters unity and happiness within the team.
Kapil Dev’s exact words at the event were:
‘Rohit Sharma does not jump like Virat Kohli, but he understands his limitations, and within those limitations, there is no better player than him. Many players have come and only played for themselves, including in captaincy roles. Rohit is better in this aspect as he unites and uplifts the entire team.’
Notably, Rohit Sharma took charge of the Indian cricket team across all formats after Virat Kohli stepped down from the role. Initially appointed as captain of the T20 team, Rohit Sharma later assumed captaincy in ODIs and Tests after Kohli relinquished these roles completely.
Under Rohit Sharma‘s captaincy, India has reached the finals of major tournaments, including the World Test Championship 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023, yet they are still vying to win an ICC trophy.
Currently, Team India remains unbeaten in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 and has secured a spot in the semifinals. Should they lift the trophy, it would mark the end of a wait spanning more than a decade.
