Mumbai, already renowned for its three international stadiums, is on track to introduce a fourth cricket venue modelled after Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, which has a huge seating capacity of 100,000, developed by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
As per a Times of India report, the MCA plans to construct the new venue in the Thane district, specifically in Amane village, approximately 68 kilometers from Wankhede Stadium. The site spans 50 acres of open land.
As per the report, MCA has applied for the open tender released by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to acquire the land. The organization is currently awaiting approval from the Maharashtra government for the proposed project.
The news comes shortly after Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis talked about the need for a larger stadium in Mumbai. He made this statement shortly after a visit by cricketers Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal to the state assembly to celebrate India’s win in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
“We have one of the historic stadiums in Mumbai in the form of Wankhede stadium. Ashish ji (BCCI treasurer and BJP MLA Ashish Shelar) is here. Mumbai needs a bigger stadium than Wankhede. Therefore, in near future our chief minister will extend all possible help to MCA and BCCI. Wankhede is a historic stadium and cannot be compared to any other. But it is time to give Mumbai a stadium with a capacity of more than one lakh,” said Fadnavis.
