Yuvraj Singh, one of India’s most admired cricketers, has carved his own path as a mentor, one that’s a far cry from the hardline coaching style of his father, Yograj Singh.

In a candid chat with PTI, the former India all-rounder admitted that while his father’s strict discipline shaped his early years, his own approach to mentoring today’s youngsters is completely different.

“I am definitely nothing like Yograj Singh. I am a very different person and a very different personality,” Yuvraj said. “When you’re coaching someone, you need to be in their shoes, understand what they’re going through, rather than just tell them what to do. It’s about balance, you take some, and you give some.”

Known for his fiery temperament and uncompromising attitude, Yograj Singh’s old-school training was legendary, stories of his tough methods, including throwing away Yuvraj’s skating shoes to make him focus on cricket, have long circulated in Indian cricket folklore.

But Yuvraj believes that the new generation of players requires empathy more than intensity. “When I was 19, nobody understood what I was going through. So now, when I see a 19 or 20-year-old, I listen first. It’s about understanding their mindset,” he explained.

Since hanging up his boots, Yuvraj has quietly mentored some of India’s brightest young talents, including Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. Both have flourished under his guidance, with Gill now captaining India in ODIs and Tests, and Abhishek rising to become the world’s No. 1 T20I batter.
