Former cricketer Yograj Singh has raised serious questions about the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, saying both legends need a strict coach like Chandrakant Pandit if they want to extend their international careers.

Speaking to InsideSport, Yograj blamed their recent failures in Australia on arrogance, claiming they started believing they were bigger than the game. He pointed to their poor run in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and said discipline and humility are the only way forward.

“I believe Rohit and Virat are the greatest talents. But nobody is greater than the game. I would say to them, ‘Get up at 5 AM, let us train.’ Sachin Tendulkar played till 43 because he was always grounded. He even played Ranji Trophy for Mumbai. That is the difference,” Yograj said.

‘Perform or step aside’

Drawing parallels to ex-KKR coach Chandrakant Pandit, Yograj said performance should be the only measure. He recalled how Pandit once asked Mohammad Kaif to step aside when he failed to deliver, saying that same standard should apply to Kohli and Rohit.

“I think the problem is, if you are not performing, you are bound to see people saying back off. Pandit always wanted performances, nothing else. Rohit and Virat too must lead from the front. If you can’t, thank you very much, you can go,” Yograj added.

Both Kohli and Rohit quit T20Is last year after winning the World Cup in Barbados and shocked fans by retiring from Test cricket earlier this year, within five days of each other. Reports suggest their ODI careers may also end after India’s upcoming tour of Australia in October, though neither has confirmed it.

For now, both are expected to be part of the three-match ODI series in Australia, which could decide whether the two modern-day greats get one final stretch in international cricket or bow out sooner than expected.
