The Indian cricket team finally put an end to an 11-year wait for ICC glory, securing the T20 World Cup title after defeating South African team in Barbados on June 29.
Fans were deeply moved, and even the usually reserved former Indian captain MS Dhoni, who seldom uses social media, logged onto Instagram to express his joy over India’s win.
The World Cup-winning captain penned down a beautiful and emotional note for the Indian cricket team and described this win as his early birthday gift. MS Dhoni celebrates his birthday on July 7.
Here’s what MS Dhoni wrote:
“WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS 2024.My heart rate was up,well done on being calm, having the self belief and doing what u guys did. From all the Indians back home and everywhere in the world a big thank you for bringing the World Cup Home. CONGRATULATIONS.arreeee thanks for the priceless birthday gift.”
India pulled together in the final once more, bouncing back from 34/3 after choosing to bat first, and managed to put up 176 runs in their 20 overs.
Virat Kohli smashed 76 runs, with solid backup from Axar Patel (47) and Shivam Dube (27). Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah each picked a wicket early on, but South Africa’s middle-order kept things competitive.
Heinrich Klaasen nearly turned the game around by smashing 24 runs in the 15th over, bringing the target down to 30 runs needed from the final five overs.
But then Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya stepped up and pulled off a miraculous win for India by just 7 runs.
