Washington Freedom, a Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise, has named veteran Australian batter Steve Smith as their captain for the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 season.
Steve Smith, who has had great success as Australia’s captain across formats, will lead an MLC team for the first time. In MLC 2023, Moises Henriques led Washington Freedom to third place with three wins in five matches.
Given the high-profile signing of Steve Smith, it was expected that Freedom would appoint the veteran batter as their captain for the upcoming season. They made an announcement on X (formerly Twitter):

Aside from captaining his national team, Steve Smith has led various T20 franchises. He notably captained IPL sides Pune Warriors, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Rajasthan Royals, and has a win-loss record of 25-17. Under his captaincy, RPS reached the IPL 2017 final.
MLC, having launched in 2023 in the USA, saw Washington Freedom reach the playoffs but lost to inaugural champions MI New York. They will kick off their tournament campaign against MI New York in MLC 2024 on July 7.
