A Uganda player flagged an incident of potential corruption, which the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) promptly addressed during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
As per a PTI report, a former Kenya international made multiple attempts to contact a Ugandan team member using various phone numbers during the league matches in Guyana.
Following ICC’s stringent anti-corruption protocols, the Ugandan player quickly informed ACU officials onsite. Notably, targeting a player from the Uganda national team is not surprising, as associate nations are often softer targets for corruption.
“It is not a surprise that this person targeted a player from the Ugandan national team. Associate nations, as compared to the big teams, are soft targets for corruption but in this case the player who was approached did the needful by informing the ICC at the earliest,” PTI quoted the source as saying.
The incident caused the officials to issue a warning against the former Kenya player and notify all associate teams about his actions. According to the ICC’s anti-corruption code, not reporting a corrupt approach is considered an offense.
Additional serious breaches encompass match-fixing, betting on matches, exploiting insider knowledge, and obstructing investigations.
