Charlotte Edwards named Sydney 6ers new WBBL head coach

Former England captain, Charlotte Edwards named Sydney 6ers new WBBL head coach, as the club attempts to reverse three seasons of poor results.

A new era has dawned on the Sydney Sixers WBBL team, English great Charlotte Edwards named Sydney 6ers new WBBL head coach.

Edwards replaces Ben Sawyer, who has been in command of the Sixers since the commencement of the WBBL and is now full-time with the Australian women’s team. Edwards is also the coach of the Southern Vipers in county cricket and has been an Adelaide Strikers assistant coach for five seasons.

After becoming back-to-back champions and twice runners-up, the Sixers have missed the finals for the last three seasons, including placing last for the first time in 2021-22. With Charlotte Edwards named Sydney 6ers new WBBL head coach, they will look to improve their chances

“I’m ecstatic to be offered the position with the Sixers, who are one of the most successful domestic women’s basketball teams in the world,” Edwards said. “The Sixers’ objective is to bring back titles to the team.”

“More significantly, I believe the way we achieve that is to play a really exciting and engaging kind of cricket that the fans will be proud of and want to come and see.” That means a lot to me and the rest of the team.”

Leah Poulton, the head of female cricket for New South Wales, paid tribute to Sawyer while welcoming the Sixers into a new era.

“Ben has been a terrific leader for the Sixers for many years and has done an incredible job grooming a generation of players,” Poulton said. “We are pleased of Ben’s accomplishments as well as the way he worked so hard to establish a team culture and a connection with our members and fans.

“Charlotte brings substantial leadership experience as well as a reputation for bringing out the best in others. She’s already displayed a clear vision for the squad; it’s a thrilling type of cricket that I’m sure our supporters will enjoy.”

Even after Charlotte Edwards named Sydney 6ers new WBBL head coach, Edwards will remain the Vipers’ head coach and will return to the team after the WBBL season is over. The competition takes place between October and November.

Seven of the Sixers’ WBBL players are under contract, including Australia’s Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner, with Ellyse Perry anticipated to return. The league’s contracting embargo was just lifted, allowing transactions to be completed.

Shafali Verma and Radha Yadav of India were the international players last season. Verma struggled when she was moved around the order, averaging only 17.36 points. Yadav, a left-arm spinner, took nine wickets at a 6.81 economy rate.
