Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI), has been fined Rs 24 lakh for sustaining a sluggish over rate during the team’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 encounter against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
Mumbai’s IPL 2022 losing skid continued as they were defeated by Punjab by 12 runs. After winning the toss and bowling first, MI struggled with the ball, allowing PBKS to score 198 for 5. Following the match, Mumbai received more bad news when they were penalised for failing to maintain the prescribed over rate. The remaining members of the playing XI were fined a total of Rs. 6 lakh, or 25% of their match fee (whichever is lower).
According to an official IPL statement:
“The Mumbai Indians have been fined after they maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match against Punjab Kings at the MCA Stadium, Pune on April 13.“
Detailing the penalties for the captain and the players, the release added:
“This was the team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was fined Rs 24 lakhs and the rest of the members in the playing eleven were fined Rs 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their match fee, whichever is lower.”
In Mumbai’s first IPL 2022 encounter against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on March 27, Rohit was fined Rs 12 lakh for the identical overrate offence.
After Mumbai’s fifth consecutive loss, Rohit Sharma said, “We haven’t been playing good cricket for a while.”
Mumbai’s loss to Punjab on Wednesday marked the team’s fifth in a row in IPL 2022. They are the only side in the competition that has yet to win a game.
