Australia’s best all-rounder, Ellyse Perry nursing stress fracture in her lower back and may be limited to batting during the Commonwealth Games.

Ellyse Perry, an Australian cricketer, is limited to batting exclusively ahead of the Commonwealth Games due to a lower back stress fracture. Perry has been included in Cricket Australia’s powerhouse 15-player national team for Birmingham, where women’s T20 will make its Games debut, but the all-rounder is nursing an injury and it is unclear whether she will bowl during the visit.

Before the Commonwealth Games, Australia will play a T20 series in Derry against Ireland and Pakistan from July 16 to 23. On July 29, they will play India in their first Games match.

In a press release, team physiotherapist Kate Beerworth stated on Ellyse Perry nursing stress fracture , “Ellyse is anticipated to play as a batter.”

“Her bowling availability will be determined by her improvement in the following weeks as well as medical advice.”

Because long-serving coach Matthew Mott has accepted a position with England’s men’s white-ball team, Shelley Nitschke, Mott’s longtime assistant, will serve as temporary head coach.

Meg Lanning’s side will be heavy favourites to win the maiden women’s T20 tournament at the Commonwealth Games, despite the absence of spin bowler Georgia Wareham and fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck, who are both battling long-term injuries.

Perry is a member of the same 15-man side that won the one-day World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year. The only change is the coach, who has left to become the head coach of England’s men’s one-day team. Shelley Nitschke, an assistant coach, will serve as the interim women’s head coach at the Games.

Australia is also the current Ashes champion and T20 global champion. They will begin the Games as overwhelming gold medal favourites and will compete in Group A pool matches against Barbados, India, and Pakistan. England, New Zealand, India, and Sri Lanka are in Group B, with the top two sides from each pool advancing to the semi-finals.

Australia’s squad for the tri-series against Ireland and the Commonwealth Games:

Meg Lanning (capt), Rachael Haynes, Darcie Brown, Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Grace Harris, Alyssa Healy, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Amanda-Jade Wellington
