The upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction promises to be a dramatic affair, with franchises divided over player retention rules.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun finalizing the retention policy, which has sparked debate among team owners regarding the number of retentions.
Earlier, for the 2022 mega auction, franchises could retain a maximum of four players with the condition that no more than three could be Indian and no more than two could be overseas players
This decrease from the previous allowance of five was due to the addition of two new teams. Now, with no new teams, franchises are pushing for a return to a higher retention limit.
According to Cricbuzz, most franchises are looking for between five and seven player retentions. Some even advocate for as many as eight.
However, there’s a completely different demand as well. A few franchises believe there should be no retentions at all, while another suggests relying solely on Right To Match (RTM) cards during the auction.
“Most franchises have requested between five and seven retentions, with one even suggesting eight. Conversely, some teams have expressed that there should be no retentions at all. Additionally, there was a request to have only RTMs and no retentions allowed. The BCCI has stated that it will disclose its decisions at the owners’ meeting” the report further added.
The BCCI is currently evaluating these diverse viewpoints and finalizing the policy before presenting it to team owners at a meeting later this month.
