Former England captain Michael Vaughan has dismissed the notion of Rishabh Pant becoming the future Indian captain, citing his performance as captain in the ongoing IPL season.
Pant, who suffered a serious injury on the eve of the 2023 New Year, was sidelined for over a year before returning to competitive cricket in the current IPL season.
While Pant has already scored two half-centuries in IPL 2024, his team has only managed to win one out of the five matches they have played so far, leaving them languishing at the bottom of the points table.
“I admire Rishabh Pant a lot. He is one of the best batters and can dominate cricket for a long time. He also has got in him to win matches for the Indian team,” Michael Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
“However, he is not a captain material. I don’t see him leading India in the future. He is coming back from a serious injury and is trying to get settled into the system.”
“He has a lot of work to do as a batter and then asking him to be captain is too much for him. Pant is not the future India captain. I feel Shubman Gill will lead India. He can be a good captain. I hope Pant proves me wrong but I don’t see him getting the captain’s armband,” Michael Vaughan concluded.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill currently leads Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024. His team has already lost three games out of the five matches that they played so far.
