The umpiring standards in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 have once again come under question after the recent IPL 2024 match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) played at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
It all unfolded in the 19th over of the first innings with Chennai Super Kings batting and MS Dhoni at the crease. Left-arm pacer of Lucknow Super Giants, Mohsin Khan, was bowling when the on-field umpire called a wide delivery, prompting LSG to review it.
Upon review, even the third umpire deemed it a wide delivery, although the ball was inside the blue line, which, according to the rules, constitutes a fair delivery.
Social media erupted with criticism over the umpiring standards. Some even went on to call for a ban on CSK for fixing.
Here are some reactions:
Ball was given wide because Dhoni reviewed it. IPL isn’t fair nowadays its all about hype and money. pic.twitter.com/D8YO37iXEW— ????????????????????????????????!????????_???????? (@bholination) April 19, 2024
How shameless are these Umpires, mdc totally biased for CSK, it’s not a wide ball. CSK should be banned for 2 years years again— ISHU YADAV (@IshRo45) April 19, 2024
MS Dhoni ended up scoring an unbeaten 28 runs from just nine balls, helping CSK post a total of 177 runs for the loss of six wickets. Though Chennai Super Kings suffered a collapse, Ravindra Jadeja’s half-century stabilized the innings.
