Shubman Gill has etched his name in the history books by breaking a long-standing record held by Sunil Gavaskar.

On Day 1 of the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, the young Indian captain went past Gavaskar’s mark for the most runs by an Indian captain in a single Test series.

Gill Goes Past Gavaskar to Top Elite List

Gill, who has been in stunning form throughout the England tour, needed just 11 runs in his first innings at The Oval to break Gavaskar’s 46-year-old record.

With that milestone, he now holds the record for most runs scored by an Indian skipper in a Test series. Gavaskar had scored 732 runs against the West Indies in the 1978–79 series.

Gill’s series so far has included three centuries, at Headingley, Edgbaston, and again in the second innings at Manchester, proving his consistency and leadership with the bat.

India Off to a Tricky Start at The Oval

In the ongoing fifth Test, India were put in to bat first after England won the toss on a green-tinged surface.

The conditions favoured fast bowlers early on, and India lost openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul cheaply.

But Gill looked composed at the crease, stitching together a steady partnership with debutant B Sai Sudharsan.

Here’s the updated list of most runs by Indian captains in a Test series:

Shubman Gill – 737 runs vs England, 2025*

Sunil Gavaskar – 732 runs vs West Indies, 1978–79

Virat Kohli – 655 runs vs England, 2016–17

Virat Kohli – 610 runs vs Sri Lanka, 2017–18

Virat Kohli – 593 runs vs England, 2018

As the Test series continues, Gill now has a golden chance to extend his tally further and guide India to a series-leveling win at The Oval.
