Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have proposed a potential rule change to the Indian Premier League (IPL) that would allow them to retain their legendary player, MS Dhoni, as an uncapped player for the 2025 season of Indian Premier League.
Before 2021, a rule allowed players retired from international cricket for over five years to be considered uncapped. This rule was reportedly removed following requests from teams, but CSK now wants its revival.

At a recent meeting in Mumbai between the IPL committee and franchises, CSK proposed to reimplement the old rule. They want to retain the veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020.
If adopted, this change could allow CSK to retain Dhoni for the next season at a much lower price than his current retention cost of INR 12 crore.

Franchises Stand Against CSK’s Suggestion
However, the idea has met with opposition from other franchises. Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran stated that designating retired international players as uncapped would be disrespectful to their value.
Several franchises backed this position, opposing the concept of classifying former international players as uncapped, no matter the duration of their retirement.
