Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has discussed the team’s recent 21-run loss to Afghanistan in the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup 2024. He also shared insights on the upcoming India versus Australia match in the same tournament.
Khawaja commented that he wasn’t surprised by Afghanistan’s win over Australia, as he was aware of their capabilities. He added that Afghanistan could have won the match against Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023.
“Afghanistan is a very strong team. They probably should have won against us in the last World Cup too,” Usman Khawaja said in a media talk at the Prime’s cafe launch in Melbourne.
It’s worth noting that Afghanistan had a strong chance to defeat Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India last year. They nearly succeeded, but Glenn Maxwell’s match-winning century turned the tables and secured victory for Australia.
However, Afghanistan capitalized on the opportunity this time and got their revenge from last year by defeating Australia, a team packed with stars including Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, and David Warner.
It’s Common To Feel Anxious: Khawaja Ahead of IND vs AUS
Discussing the upcoming Australia versus India match, Usman Khawaja stressed its critical nature for Australia’s semi-final chances. While he recognized potential player nerves, he maintained confidence in Australia’s ability to bounce back from their recent loss to Afghanistan.
“It’s very human to be nervous and a little more anxious, but Australia has played very good T20 cricket up until Afghanistan. That’s the beauty of T20 cricket; it just needs one moment to change the whole scenario,” Khawaja concluded.
